With powers that can twist the reality itself, two creatures trapped in a research facility are trying to escape.

Split is a puzzle-platformer for two players. (Or one player with especially good coordination skills). It consists of 5 brain twisting levels and has about 30 minutes of playing time.

The game was designed in a collaborative effort with the team members from varying backgrounds. All team members contributed to the project in significant ways and many worked in multiple areas of development in addition to their main tasks.

Sound effects used in the game are from Pixabay.

ABOUT

The game was created during a game jam for Aalto University Game Design students. The jam started on Monday 29.8.2022 at 10 and ended on Friday 2.9.2022 at 15. Our team consisted of 4 students: two first year major students, one minor student and one second year student.

The theme of the jam was The Twist and it was suggested by the organizer that it could be interpreted as making clone of an existing game, with a twist. However, after throwing off ideas for 2 hours our team landed on a more ambitious plan. We would make an original game that does not only twist the concept of one game, but instead the whole genre of split screen games.

two much action for a puzzle

Thanks for the comment!

Can I ask whether you played with a friend or alone? The game was designed to be played co-operatively by two players and the difficulty is adjusted accordingly. However, I know that many also play this game as a solo version in which case the fourth level can be quite difficult because of the time pressure and platforming elements.

I was playing with a friend, and we expected for this to be a puzzle game, so this was surprising and unpredictable to us, that the fourth level was with time limit. What was the designer's idea, that made that level time-limited? Time pressure to think fast? But you have infinite amount of lives, so this feels more like "oh, I've gotta check that place for clues one more time, 'cause the game doesn't let me have enough time to check it fully"

The idea was exactly to change the pace of the game and provide variation. The level was also intended to build tension for the narrative structere as that is the penultimate level and the last one in which the characters are still trapped inside the building before their escape.

Throughly searching the level was actually something we had not thought the players would be doing in the level. Thank you for pointing out your experiences. If we will ever continue the project, I'll take these comments into account.

Thanks for taking interest in the game. I hope you enjoyed the other levels!

Game is great, could you please tell me where did you get that ambient from the main menu? It sounds really soothing. Pretty sure it’s by Erokia..

Thank you for the comment and sorry for getting back so late!
I went through our sound assets folder and managed to find the original soundtracks from Pixabay with the help of Google.

In the main menu there is three tracks playing over each other:

I believe the first track might be what you were interested in.

This is an awesome design! I love the moody environment and brilliant twist in mechanics. You get to be quite creative in finding your way through the puzzles.
